Alternative Firmware for a connected TV: the next level of media convergence
Bouygues Telecom’s project is to develop a software able to play remote video streams from their TV channels directly on a Samsung flat-screen LED TV. This PFE is based on SamyGo, a community project about customizing Samsung televisions. With this feature, the TV box included in their triple-play plan since the beginning will be completely unneeded. The video streams will be sent by the Modem box on the subscriber’s local network, and directly received on the TV over Ethernet or Wi-Fi (IPTV). Moreover, the television’s interface has been modified to have Bouygues Telecom’s colors. While allowing Bouygues Telecom to save money by reducing equipment and maintenance costs, this project also gives way to new possibilities for the customers. Using Bouygues Telecom’s new feature, they will be able to stream any video from their computer to their TV, thus removing the need to copy their movies on USB sticks. This project allows a new economic model to be applied to the ISP business.
