InterAction allows users to choose the media they want to display on different screens in an interactive and entertaining way.
Nowadays, we see screens displaying media, commercials and informations all the time in various places: in the metro, at work, at schools, in airports, in the streets, in showrooms… This is called digital signage. Digital signage systems get their content from a personal computer or a servers from an external hosting provider. It means that the content displayed can be constantly updated and changed at any time, remotely. It is adaptable. For exemple, the screen's content could be changed faster during rush hours in the metro or shops could change their ads depending on the time of the day… The aim of digital signage is to have a screen displaying a precise content to a specific person at the right moment.
Yet, we think there is a better way to interest the user: with interAction, we give him the opportunity to choose the media he wants to display - in an interactive and entertaining way ! The system is composed of several screens with one player each, one Microsoft Kinect at least and a Linux machine that runs the webserver and contains the database.
The system is divided in two parts: the "passive interaction" and the "active interaction". The user is attracted by an interactive game where he will be physically involved. The system is then displaying two messages on the interactive game screen: "Please connect to InterAction Screen WIFI” and a few seconds later “You can now tag the NFC chip”. The NFC chip is placed under the screen. Once the user has tagged the chip, an internet webpage pops up on his smartphone. This is the passive interaction part and it is the first system that the user will see.
He can then choose whatever he wants: videos, maps, pictures... in order to display it on a specific screen. This is the Active interaction part. It is the user who decides to watch the content - and that is completely new ! Moreover, the system can be used by multiple user at the same time. This will improve the eye-catching effect: the more user are in front of the system, the more attractive it will be.
This project was developed with our partner Defocus films, an audio visual production company. They provided all the tools we needed and gave a great feedback on our work. Thanks to this partnership, we were able to produce a system that meets the user’s demand.
